All WPs and their tasks were designed taking into account every participant’s expertise and experience in research, intervention implementation, evaluation and advocacy.
The aim of APDES is to intervene with vulnerable communities and people, in order to improve their access to health care services, employment and education, working for the empowerment of institutions and individuals, as well as for the reinforcement of social cohesion. Its work is in line with 4 lines of intervention, being the most relevant for this project: • Health, harm reduction and Human Rights: the goal is to decrease the risks associated with drug use and sexual activity; the possible negative consequences of these behaviours (at an individual or community level) can be reduced through adequate interventions. Its main concern is to promote health and defend the human rights of those they work with, through projects designed with their active involvement, in order to guarantee the well-being and health of the participants. • Health education: APDES promotes the well-being of individuals and encourages healthier life-styles in several contexts, such as schools, local communities, prisons, party settings, etc. resorting to intervention strategies properly adapted to the social and demographic characteristics, social dynamics and contexts of each target-group. The intention is to promote an extensive knowledge on health protective factors and to facilitate the development of attitudes and behaviours that allow the individual to better structure his/her daily routine, as well as to improve his/her physical, mental and social well-being. This NGO’s activities are carried out in accordance with the following work principles: a) Research, aiming to fully comprehend the phenomena the NGO works with is the base mechanism for a scientifically supported intervention. By now APDES integrates a research unity named Research on Education and Community Intervention – RECI accredit by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation. b) Participative methodologies, in order to promote the recognition and involvement of all the participants in the processes of development. c) Outreach intervention, adopting interventions that actively involve the population and the territories, by positively acting in people’s lives. At the moment APDES have 3 projects highlighted as Best practices by WHO and its project CHECK!N (intervention in party settings) was awarded with the European Drug Prevention Prize by Pompidou Group, Council of Europe. d) Advocacy, aiming to empower and give voice to the population, by promoting social mobility for a more participative and critical democracy. Our goal is to have some influence in citizenship and territorial development political agendas, in a permanent dialogue with civil society. APDES has been playing an important role in the national landscape by innovating in several intervention fields, largely in the drug phenomenon, and by working internationally with numerous partners in the development of research and intervention networks, in order to improve the work done in these areas and to share good practices.
